How did I get into this work, is a question often asked of me.  The answer is that every part of my life has led me to working with older adults with a passion for knowing them and enhancing their lives.

MY FAMILY: It must have started with Flossie, Irving, Peachy and Randall, my grandparents.  They were there for me as I grew up, providing endless love, stories, opportunities and a sense of family heritage.  My Mother, Betty Satterwhite, was an educator at the University of Rochester in family support and chronic disease.  My Father, Randy Satterwhite, an executive at Eastman Kodak, epitomized a devotion to his employees by leading them with grace, excellence and passion. My father died of cancer when I was 23 and my mother died when I was 50.  Randy died in the hospital, while I was at work a few miles away.  My mother died in Mexico, thousands of miles away.  To this day I wish I could have been with them at that time.  My mother-in-law, Ruth, a fiercely independent and vibrant person, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s over 15 years ago. I found myself stepping through her barriers and facilitating most aspects of her life.  She is still alive and the conditions encompassing her care continue to teach me about resilience, dedication and pleasure.  A loving family and a legacy of “giving back” have always been a part of my life.  I jokingly say “I am in the business of collecting mothers and fathers.”  We live in a time of scattered families, with parents and grandparents often miles away.  My personal philosophy is to embrace my clients, as if they were my own parents. Not only am I enriched and honored to be of service to them, but I often feel that I am seeing my own parents and grandparents in their faces.

MY CAREERS: As a math major, at Wells College in upstate New York, I worked in my home town of Rochester, New York as a computer programmer and then a systems analyst in the accounting department at Eastman Kodak for six years.  Leaving corporate America behind, I came to Seattle while my husband attended graduate school in Art.  My passion for textile art took me into the welcoming arms of the weaving community as I worked for The Weaving Works and taught spinning.  Seeing a need for an art gallery devoted to textiles, I launched my next endeavor as a co-owner of The Flying Shuttle, a renowned gallery in Pioneer Square.  This was an exceptional adventure in collaboration and business development which defined many of my business skills. After selling the gallery I found my organizational and accounting skills useful as the bookkeeper of my own church.  Working for my Unitarian family, under the leadership of Rev. Peter Raible, opened my eyes to the universal challenges of life.  I saw an ability to dedicate myself to helping others with my financial, technical, organizational and artistic skills.  Following my five years at UUC I worked for a small company which managed the City of Seattle’s micro-lending program to minority and women owned businesses.  This experience took me into the businesses and lives of others, witnessing their dreams and struggles as they tried to follow their passions and swim against the current of opposition.  I left there hoping to get into education and worked for Discover U for only a matter of months until my mother suddenly passed away.  Betty’s death and the need to manage my mother-in-law, Ruth, kindled my desire to help others struggling with aging, isolation, and the difficulties of daily life.  I started helping a few folks on my own, while working part-time at Partners In Care, a guardianship and trust management agency.  As an agency focused on managing the lives of many diverse people, I gained a thorough “education” in care and financial management.  Friends started seeking me out to help their friends and with the growth of my own clientele I launched my business, Adult Care Resources in 1998.  

PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS:  My choice to have no employees represents my one-on-one, holistic approach.  When you hire Adult Care Resources for services, it is me that you will be working with, offering a variety of services in one person. However, I am not isolated in my work.  I have partnered with a very select group, who like myself, are one person enterprises.  We have called ourselves People Who Care. We are like employees to each other, meeting monthly to share wisdom and further our caregiving/companion skills.  We refer clients to each other, consult with each other, hire each other and fill in for each other when emergency situations arise.  I am also a member of the Northend Senior Care Coalition which is a professional association of service providers that meets monthly.  This organization keeps me networked with a dedicated group of professionals including In Home Care Agencies, Care Managers, retirement and residential living communities, attorneys, therapists, and a host of other exciting and useful services.

MY GOALS:  I have made a personal pledge to surround those in need with love, support, healthy opportunities and a sense of community. As we age and the world gets more complicated, with unconnected families, and a culture that denounces aging, the struggle to belong and feel secure can diminish quickly. I look to those who are farther down the path of life for inspiration, courage, companionship and a sense of place, and I find myself helping families connect with their loved ones to create positive lives and memories. In place of the separation that families experience lies an opportunity for non-nuclear relationships to flourish.  The joy and satisfaction I derive from my career is something I wish to encourage for others.  I have trained others to join me in this work and am eager to share my experience and support.
